Settled in the heart of Chicago's financial district, the Driehaus College of Business and Kellstadt Graduate School of Business at DePaul University bring the expertise, academic rigor, and legacy of a top-tier business education to its online Master of Science in Accountancy (MSA) program.Learn more about DePaul's MSA.
Like a master’s in accounting degree (MAcc), DePaul's online MSA program covers foundational accounting skills. What makes the MSA unique is the comprehensive coverage of advanced accounting topics, including the knowledge needed to pass the CPA exam. Accounting students benefit from online courses in the topics included on the exam and free access to resources for preparation. Beyond that, students will gain hands-on experience in the practice of accounting as well as deep knowledge of accounting principles and ethics, empowering graduates to stay ahead of disruptions caused by technology and changes in regulation.
Is the online MSA degree right for you?
Our online Master of Science in Accounting program accepts students from a range of business backgrounds. It is designed both for professionals looking to enter the accounting field as well as those who want to elevate their careers and pursue senior accounting roles.
Online MSA degree Curriculum
Because it was designed by industry veterans, DePaul's online MSA program covers the top skills students need for successful accounting careers. For example, Robert Half's 2017 Accounting & Finance Salary Guide identified internal audit, risk, and compliance as some of the most in-demand skills for the profession.
In addition to covering many aspects of regulation, DePaul's MSA includes two in-depth auditing courses. The program is taught by industry experts and researchers with decades of experience, giving students insight into the problems and solutions that their employers and future clients will face.

CPA Exam Prep
Many DePaul online MSA students are interested in earning licensure as Certified Public Accountants to boost their earning potential and take on new responsibilities. Only CPAs can legally conduct audits and file reports to the Securities and Exchange Commission. To become a CPA, you must:
- Complete 150 semester hours of education
- Pass the Uniform Certified Public Accountant Examination
- Meet all state requirements, including minimum professional experience and a transcript review
The 16-hour exam—split into four parts to be completed separately over a period of 18 months–can be highly challenging even for experienced accountants. In the online master’s program, professionals develop the comprehensive knowledge of advanced topics that they need to succeed on the CPA exam.
DePaul accounting students can get ready for testing with free access to University Pass from Surgent CPA Exam Review while they are enrolled in the program. These preparatory materials allow test-takers to brush up on accounting concepts and become comfortable with answering the CPA exam’s combination of multiple-choice questions, task-based simulations and written communications items. This program includes instructional videos and practice test questions, which feature adaptive technology to concentrate on the topics where students need the most help.
Students can enroll in seven University Pass online courses featuring material tied to each of the exam sections:
For the Auditing and Attestation (AUD) section:
For the Business and Environment Concepts (BEC) section:
- Cost Accounting
For the Financial Accounting and Reporting (FAR) section:
- Intermediate Accounting
- Intermediate Accounting II
- Advanced Accounting
For the Regulation (REG) section:
- Individual Taxation
- Corporate Taxation
