Like a master’s in accounting degree (MAcc), DePaul's online MSA program covers foundational accounting skills. What makes the MSA unique is the comprehensive coverage of advanced accounting topics, including the knowledge needed to pass the CPA exam. Accounting students benefit from online courses in the topics included on the exam and free access to resources for preparation. Beyond that, students will gain hands-on experience in the practice of accounting as well as deep knowledge of accounting principles and ethics, empowering graduates to stay ahead of disruptions caused by technology and changes in regulation.
Is the online MSA degree right for you?
DePaul is dedicated to making higher education more accessible. Our online Master of Science in Accountancy program accepts students from a range of backgrounds, including both those who are looking to enter the accounting field without a previous business degree and those who want to elevate their careers. It is specifically developed for digital learning, leveraging DePaul’s eight-year history of offering online accounting education. In addition, we are pleased to offer guaranteed scholarships to our incoming students.
Online MSA degree Curriculum
Because it was designed by industry veterans, DePaul's online MSA program covers the top skills students need for successful accounting careers. For example, Robert Half's 2017 Accounting & Finance Salary Guide identified internal audit, risk and compliance as some of the most in-demand skills for the profession.
In addition to covering many aspects of regulation, DePaul's MSA includes two in-depth auditing courses. The program is taught by industry experts and researchers with decades of experience, giving students insight into the problems and solutions that their employers and future clients will face.

CPA Exam Prep
Many DePaul online MSA students are interested in earning licensure as certified public accountants to boost their earning potential and take on new responsibilities. Only CPAs can legally conduct audits and file reports to the Securities and Exchange Commission. To become a CPA, you must:
- Complete 150 semester hours of education
- Pass the Uniform Certified Public Accountant Examination
- Meet all state requirements, including minimum professional experience and a transcript review
We have a proven track record of helping students prepare for the exam. In a recent survey of all final term DePaul MSA students, 100% of respondents were “Very Satisfied” with the CPA exam preparation that we provide.
Taking the CPA Exam
The 16-hour exam—split into four parts to be completed separately over a period of 18 months—can be highly challenging even for experienced accountants. In the online master’s program, professionals develop the comprehensive knowledge of advanced topics that they need to succeed on the CPA exam.
