Global Tax Specialist, Alumna Harnesses Program Knowledge To Further Accounting Career
“I bring a fresh perspective and refreshing, energetic vibe to any role I take on,” says Regina Scruggs, a high-performing accounting professional and 2021 alumna of the online Master of Science in Accountancy (MSA) program.
Scruggs has over eight years of experience in corporate accounting and finance. While at DePaul, she worked for various Fortune 500 companies, including as an engagement financial advisor at Deloitte.
She considers her time at the Big Four accounting firm to be one of her biggest accomplishments, noting, “It was a challenging but very rewarding experience. It opened doors for me to take my talents even further.”
Now working at Accenture as a global tax specialist, Scruggs is continuing to learn and network with colleagues across the globe. She credits DePaul with furthering her accounting knowledge and preparing her to take the CPA exam. Here, Scruggs shares details about why she selected DePaul and her experience completing the online MSA while working full-time.
Why did you select the DePaul University online Master of Science in Accountancy program?
I chose the online MSA so that I could continue to develop and grow my knowledge and skills for my next adventure as an accounting professional.
As a DePaul undergraduate alumna, I was familiar with many of the faculty and the fast-paced quarter system. I also selected the online program because it is flexible, which allowed me to continue working full-time.
What was the online learning experience like for you?
The program is self-paced with weekly assignments. The online learning platform was easy to navigate, and I enjoyed communicating with other students through the discussion posts and team projects. I was able to learn about their backgrounds and why they chose DePaul.
The professors understood the challenges of a virtual environment and made themselves accessible to students when needed. They put many hours into creating detailed lecture videos.
How has the program benefited you?
The program has enhanced my accounting knowledge, which will help me when I take the CPA exam. It also helped fine-tune the skills I already possessed.
What knowledge and skills did you acquire that you find especially valuable?
Since I currently work in a tax role, the skills I acquired regarding tax for corporations and individual tax were very helpful. I was able to understand in more detail why certain tax decisions are made and what the legal ramifications are.
What would you like others to know about this program?
This program is excellent for working professionals who need flexibility due to professional and family obligations.
What are your professional plans for the future?
I would like to take the CPA exam and start my own business. I also want to help aspiring CPAs with mentorship and knowledge sharing
